PCS moves run on strict deadlines, TMO requirements, and paperwork precision. Use this guide to avoid the chaos, maximize your allowances, and ensure your move stays on track.

Why a PCS Move is Not a Standard Move

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is far more complex than a typical civilian relocation. Unlike a normal move where you control everything, here your dates are set by the Department of Defense (DoD), your reimbursement depends on strict regulations (JTR), and a single paperwork error can delay your payment for weeks.

To succeed, you need to manage three things simultaneously:

  1. Logistics: Getting your stuff from A to B.

  2. Finance: Applying for DLA, MALT, and Per Diem.

  3. Life: Schools, housing, and pets.

6–8 Weeks Out: Orders & Strategy

1. Get Your Official Orders

You cannot book a move, open a DPS account, or request an advance without hard copies of your orders. Make 10 copies immediately. You will need them for everything from lease breaking to enrolling kids in school.

2. Log into DPS (Defense Personal Property System)

This is your "Command Center." You must:

  • Register your move.

  • Upload your orders.

  • Crucial Decision: Choose between a Government Move (HHG), a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), or a Partial PPM.

2 Weeks Out: Packing & Documents

1. Create Your "Do Not Pack" Binder

4. Prepare the "First Night Box"

Moving Day: Execution

If doing a PPM (DITY):

  • Get Tare Weight: Weigh the truck empty with a full tank of gas. This is mandatory.

  • Load: Load heavy items first (appliances, furniture). Distribute weight evenly to avoid swaying. Secure everything with straps.

  • Clean: Do the final sweep/mop after the truck is loaded.

  • Get Gross Weight: Drive the fully loaded truck back to the scale.
